Welcome Back! Term 2 in Room 15

Welcome back to Term 2!

What a busy start to the new term we have had. We farwelled old friends and welcomed 2 new friends with open arms.

In Literacy we have started our Guided Reading groups. We have learnt how to be independant workers and have developed the skills to make text to self connections. We have also been learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives. We have created posters of Nelly Noun, Viren Verb and Adam Adjective to help us remember the different types of words.

We have also begun investigating the differences between fiction and non fiction texts. We have learnt that a fiction text is a made up story and that a non fiction texts teaches us something and provides us with information about a topic. We are currently writing our own fiction texts. We have just finished our story maps and are about the begin writing our drafts. We will keep you updated on the progress of our stories!

In Numeracy we have been learning about odd and even numbers. With Miss Dengate we made odd and even street to help us learn the difference between the numbers. We have learnt that odd numbers end in a 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and that even numbers end in a 0, 2, 4, 6, 8. If you look closely all the houses on even street are symmetrical and even whereas the houses on odd street are all wonky and crooked.

A reminder to all parents that doors open at 8.35am. As stated in the classroom policy it would be greatly appreciated if all children can please come to class when the first siren goes. This time allows the children to prepare themselves for the day ahead and settle into classroom routine and complete their written morning task.

I would also like to remind parents that Term 2 parent roster is outside our class every morning. Please put your name down to help with our homework folders. If we have no parent helpers then our homework folders will not get signed and our books changed.

Thank you
Miss Russell

Term 1 Week 5 - 7

What a busy past few weeks we have had in Room 15.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings we have been participating in group fitness. We love visiting Miss Lockyer and Mrs Paganini/Mrs Fitzgerald and playing fun fitness games with them. We REALLY enjoy doing Jump Jam. We particularly love dancing to the theme song from the Madagascar movie 'I Like To Move It'.

In Literacy we have been trying so hard to practise our spelling list words. Each day we complete different activities with the same words to help us remember how they are spelt. On Fridays we set our goal for how many people will get 10/10. Last week we set a new class record and 14 of our friends got 10/10. This week we are aiming for 15 friends.

We have also been working on creating a story wheel. Each day we read the book The Hidden Forrest by Jeannie Baker as part of our Guided Reading Program. We then discussed the 5 main events in the story and drew one event in each part of the wheel. After we had finished our marvellous drawings we shared our story wheel in groups of 4 and had to retell the story to our friends using our drawings.

In Numeracy we have begun exploring Place Value. We have been watching many place value vidoes and have learnt a song that helps us to remember our ones, tens and hundreds.  We have been working in groups to place the digits cards and the place value blocks into the correct columns.  It is tricky but with practise we are sure we can become place value masters.

Welcome to Room 15

Wow! What a fantastic start to the year we have had in Room 15.

We have welcomed new friends with open arms and continued to grow our friendships from Pre Primary.

We have been practising our handwriting everyday and are becoming experts at writing on dotted third paper. In Literacy Block we have also been focusing on guided reading and building up our oral comprehension skills. Miss Russell has also been teaching us about spelling, sight words and phonics. We are learning so much!

In our Numeracy Block we have been learning how to count to 100. We have read many counting books, watched hundreds of counting videos and learnt the big number song. We even counted up to 1 BILLION!! Now that we are expert counters we have begun skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. It can be very tricky but Miss Russell has taught us a cool hoop game that helps us to remember the order of the numbers.

We have really enjoyed our first 5 weeks of year 1. We cannot wait to share our next adventures with you.
